In acknowledging the receipt of your letter 18th inst. on the subject of the liability of a house at Hong Kong hired as Quarters for the Officer Commanding the Royal Artillery to assessments for local taxes, I am directed by Secretary Sir John Pakington to express his satisfaction that His Grace the Duke of Buckingham and Chandos admits the title of part of the Building to exemption.

It was mentioned in War Office letter of 31st August last that the house in question contained one more room than Captain Carey was strictly entitled to, and Sir John Pakington will not oppose that Officer being assessed for such excess, if insisted on by the Colonial Authorities.

I am, however, to state that it is reported that two out of the four rooms contained in the house, being on the ground floor,

Under Secretary of State,

Colonial Office.
